The wealth tax on savings and investments in 2022?
The well-known slogan of the Tax Authorities “We can’t make it more fun, but we can make it easier”, what will happen in 2022? Changes will be implemented for the wealth tax in box 3, among other things. How this will work out depends partly on the size and distribution of the wealth.
In summary it comes down to this:
- More exemption for ‘green’ savers or investors
- The tax-free allowance threshold is rising
- Lower taxes for higher assets
When will you pay wealth tax?
If your assets amount to more than €50,650 on 1 January 2022, you will have to pay wealth tax on your assets, also known as wealth tax. In the case of a fiscal partnership, the limit is therefore twice the amount of €101,300. Are you below the aforementioned amount with your savings, investments and other assets? Then you do not pay tax on this assets.
Wealth tax in 2019
Wealth tax exemptions
In the current tax system, the tax-free allowance is set at €30,360. The date is always taken as 1 January. So if your assets were less than this on 1 January 2019, you do not have to pay tax on this. In the case of a fiscal partnership, the tax-free allowance is €60,720.
Calculation of wealth tax
You pay 30% tax on the amount above the exemptions mentioned on the return determined by the tax authorities. On the website of the tax authorities you can read how this fictitious return is set. It is important to know that the actual paid out savings interest and the achieved return should not be taken into account. The chosen form of savings is also irrelevant and no distinction is made between saving or investing . In the overview below you will find the percentages for your calculations.
| Disk | Assets | Rendementsheffing |
| Tax-free assets | Less than €30,360 | 0% |
| Disk 1 | €30,361 to €102,010 | 0,58% |
| Disk 2 | €102,010 to €1,020,096 | 1,34% |
| Disk 3 | From € 1,020,096 | 1,68% |

Calculation example
Suppose that fiscal partnership does not apply to you and that your assets in 2019 are €100,000. No tax is withheld up to the amount of €30,360. You do pay a yield tax of 0.58% on the remaining amount of €69,640. This amounts to €404 and this means a tax of 0.40% on the total.
Wealth tax from 2022
Here we will take a closer look at the proposed tax on wealth from 2022 onwards.
Exemptions from new wealth tax
With the introduction of the new tax system, the assets may amount to €50,650 without having to pay tax on it. Everything above that is then taxed in box 3. In box 3, a tax-free income of €400 still applies. If the fictitious return on your assets is lower than €400, you will not pay any further tax. In the case of fiscal partnership, the double exemption still applies.
How do you calculate wealth tax in the new system?
If your assets exceed the exemption, you will pay 31% tax on the fictitious return (estimated return). View the return on assets for 2022 in the overview below. This table comes from the Tax Authorities . This return is calculated using an estimated average with regard to a portion of the invested assets and a portion of savings.
The Tax Authorities have assumed that higher asset classes have more of this wealth in investments. Regarding this example, you could say that savings (-0.01%) are taxed less and less for higher asset classes, while this increases for investments. However, in practice this does not correspond directly.
In the table below you will find the percentages with which you could calculate your own wealth tax.
| Disk | Assets | Rendementsheffing |
| Tax-free assets | Less than €50,650 | 0% |
| Disk 1 | €50,651 to €101,300 | 1,82% |
| Disk 2 | €101,301 to €1,012,350 | 4,37% |
| Disk 3 | € 1,012,351 and above | 5,53% |

The consequences of the new wealth tax for savings and investments
A green future is increasingly being mentioned. You can also contribute to this when saving or investing. Green saving or green investing in 2022 can ensure a higher tax-free capital of up to €61,215 (or €122,430 for fiscal partners).
In contrast to the €30,846 that was part of the tax-free allowance in 2020, the limit in 2022 will be €50,650.
In which cases is there a tax reduction or tax increase?
The changes in wealth tax have a major impact. Savers will be taxed less heavily and investors more. Saving will therefore be financially more favourable compared to before, but still not profitable. The consequences of the new tax system for your personal tax return depend partly on the size and distribution of your total wealth. It is a good idea to take this into account when drawing up your financial plan.
